Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is an advanced reproductive technique where a single sperm is directly injected into each egg in a laboratory setting. This increases the likelihood for fertilization to occur, especially in cases where traditional breeding methods have not been successful. View our “The ICSI Process” page for more information.
-
ICSI is commonly used for mares that have difficulty conceiving, mares with uterine or ovulation issues, older mares, or performance mares with limited time for breeding. It is also highly effective for stallions with low sperm count, reduced motility, or limited semen availability. View our “Is ICSI Right For My Mare?” page for more information.

Traditional embryo transfer relies on natural fertilization inside the mare’s reproductive tract. ICSI enables fertilization to occur outside of the mare by directly injecting a sperm into an egg. This allows greater control, efficiency, and likelihood for success in challenging cases.
-
At EQUIGEA, all steps of the ICSI process, from aspiration to transfer of embryos, are performed entirely in our in-house laboratory in Summerfield, Florida. Unlike most programs that split services between multiple facilities, we manage everything under one roof for complete continuity of care and quality control.
-
Once embryos are created, they can either be transferred into a recipient mare or frozen for future use. This gives owners flexibility in planning breeding programs and timing pregnancies.
-
Yes. If you would prefer your mare not carry her embryo, we maintain one of the largest recipient mare herds in the Southeast, allowing us to support your program at scale and with dependable availability.
-
Oocyte collection is a veterinary procedure performed routinely at our facility under standing sedation and ultrasound guidance. While it is considered an invasive procedure, it is generally well tolerated and there are typically no long term effects on the mare’s future fertility.
-
Yes. One of the major advantages of ICSI is that it can be performed using frozen, limited, or low-quality semen samples.
